2-11 Covering epithelia

Simple squamous epithelium – 2
The lung is covered by the pleural membrane whose outer surface is lined by a single layer of squamous cells.
This layer is a simple squamous epithelium placed on a thin layer of connective tissue that is continuous with the connective tissue of the lung parenchyma.
When you hover the cursor or click on the image, the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells are highlighted in red and their nuclei in blue.
Notice how thin the epithelial layer is. Their nuclei follow the shape of the cells and are also flattened.

The simple squamous epithelia that line surface of the coelomic cavities of the body (pleural, peritoneal and pericardial cavities) as well as of the organs inside these cavities is also called a mesothelium (plural: mesothelia).
